The Mayor of Medgidia was appointed by the entire delegation of the Romanian presence in Turkey, in Istanbul, as our country's representative to the Assembly of Mayors of the Balkans. The forum was founded at the end of the cooperation and solidarity forum in the Balkans, held by the City of Bayrampasa, from 23 to 25 June.
For two days, Istanbul was the host of important delegations, coming from all Balkan countries. Romania was represented by delegates from Bucharest, Iasi, Constanta and Medgidia, who presented the most important development projects in each community.
Medgidia was represented by Mayor Marian Iordache, who pointed out in his speech at the forum the most important projects of his city and brought up for discussion the basic objectives of regional development policy. “An important principle underpinning the development and application of regional development policies refer to the decentralization of the decision-making process, from the central/regional government to that of the community. There ares also important the partnerships between all actors involved in regional development and planning the process for the use of resources through programs and projects for achieving defined goals”, said the Mayor of Medgidia at the forum in Istanbul.
“Turkey, the gateway between Europe and the rest of the world”
In his speech, the Mayor of Bayrampasa, Mr. Huseyin Burge, spoke of cooperation and solidarity between people of different ethnic groups and citizens of countries involved. “We did experience exchanges with your countries, we have been successful and we want a socio-economic unit, which we started already. Turkey wants to join the European Union – as location we are - but we are also an important area of strategic importance for the good of the great European family. Turkey has always been the gateway between Europe and the rest of the world, starting with Asia. We are a globalized area since the beginning of history and we deserve to continue at this rate. Let us use our common history and mentality to validate what we want to accomplish for the development of the Balkan area”, said Mr. Burgos, the Mayor.
The project is standing on four development pillars.
The delegations have received the Turkish draft, had time to analyze it, and in the end everyone agreed with the proposal of the Bayrampasa municipality.
The four pillars of development refer to development on the touristic level, networking level, programs for youth and cultural development. The agreement was signed at the end of the two days of discussions, by all the participants, following that, at predetermined intervals, the leadership will be changed amongst signatories. The first president of the Assembly of Mayors in the Balkans is the mayor of Bayrampasa, Huseyin Burg.
